Raid music: what you play, and what the game should play

A question on two levels.

Level one, everyday. What’s playing in the background when you go on a raid, in any game? Gearing up, the ride in, the quiet search, the firefight, the sprint to extraction. Every moment has its own track. We know.

Level two, for us. In DFZ, sound decides everything. Mutants hunt by sound, a sprint across gravel can be heard a long way off, bottles ring, and a creaking hinge carries into the next room. Music on top of all that can help. It can also get you killed. So we want to know what you expect:

  • In the raid. Silence and just the world? Music at the peak, once the shooting starts? A quiet background that doesn’t get in the way of listening?
  • In the hub. What should play while the squad gathers and the Guide starts the car?
  • At extraction and after death. A sound of its own, or is plain silence better?

Hotline Miami proved music can be half the game. But nobody there was hunting you by the sound of your footsteps.

Comms node protocol. No music over the radio: the channel is for business. Headphones set so you can hear the footsteps behind you. The Dispatcher no longer calls the ones who didn’t hear them.
